Watering the Lawn

During prolonged dry periods you will probably need to water the lawn, but please observe any hosepipe bans that may be in force.

Grass can survive without rain for up to 14 days, but any more than this and you will notice signs of stress as it wilts and loses its springiness.

Aerate the Lawn (if necessary)

Before watering, you may need to prick the surface if the ground is baked hard. Otherwise the water will tend to run off and not soak into the soil. Use a garden fork or an aerator to do this. Aerating the soil will help the water get right down to the roots of the grass.

Water the Lawn Thoroughly

Water the lawn thoroughly. It is better to water your lawn thoroughly once a week, than to give it a light watering every day.

When you water lightly, it is unlikely that the water will penetrate more than half an inch into the soil. This will actually encourage the grass roots to turn upwards towards the moisture, which will weaken the lawn.

Try to water the lawn during the cool periods of the day, and avoid watering in direct sunlight. The best times for watering the lawn is either very early in the morning, or late in the evening.
